Afghanistan one step away from World Cup

It has taken less than eight months for Afghanistan to jump from the fifth division of world cricket to one level below the major Test-playing countries. The team from the war-torn nation continued one of sport's unlikeliest success stories by winning the third division in Argentina last week, a six-team tournament which doubles as a qualifier for the World Cup.

The Afghanistan players are expecting a huge reception back home in Kabul after winning the World Cricket League Division 3 in Argentina. The team left Buenos Aires on Sunday night and will arrive in Afghanistan on Tuesday, and fast bowler Hameed Hasan was anticipating a large crowd turning out to greet them.

Afghanistan booked their place in April's qualifying tournament for the 2011 World Cup on Saturday when they defeated the Cayman Islands by 82 runs to finish top of the World Cricket League Division 3. Afghanistan's remarkable journey from Division 5 to the verge of the World Cup - not to mention ODI status - almost came unstuck yesterday when they were heading towards defeat by Cayman Islands, a result that would have ended the dream. But they were spared by the rain, and today they were back to their best.

Afghanistan's dream of World Cup qualification is still alive after they qualified to play Uganda in the World Cricket League (WCL) Division Three final in Buenos Aires. The top two sides also qualify to take part in the 2011 World Cup Qualifier in South Africa later this year.

Hong Kong's dreams of playing at the 2011 Cricket World Cup are in tatters after they were beaten by a single run by Uganda at the Corimayo ground today. Hong Kong had fought back well in a topsy-turvy match to put themselves in a strong position to pull off a stunning victory but a flurry of late wickets saw them slump to the most agonising of defeats.
