Hashim Amla missed his century by three runs but his elegant 97 helped South Africa to put up a stiff 289-run target for the Australians in the fifth and final one-dayer at the WACA Ground on Friday. Amla stroked six fours and a six in his 117-ball knock and put on 118 runs for the third wicket with AB de Villiers (60) after South Africa lost Herschelle Gibbs and Neil McKenzie early, after skipper Johan Botha won the toss and opted to bat.

Earlier, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and opening batsman Shaun Marsh slammed half centuries as the the hosts set a target of 250 for South Africa to chase.

Michael Clarke's plucky century and handy contributions from the lower order at the Sydney Cricket Ground ensured Australia lived to fight another day as the hosts reached 445 before being bowled out on day two. Clarke, who was eventually dismissed for 138, caught and bowled by JP Duminy, took full advantage of South Africa's missed opportunities to reach his tenth Test century and the first on his home ground, which came off 250 balls including 17 fours.
