The Afghanistan cricket team's hopes of clinching a place in the 2011 World Cup were dealt a blow on Monday after they lost by six wickets to Canada. However, their hopes of qualifying for the tournament are still not over.

Ireland's hopes of reaching the final of the ICC World Cup qualifiers were hit by a 22-run defeat to Afghanistan in the first Super Eight match today. Afghanistan reached 218 for seven from their 50 overs thanks to an unbeaten half-century from Raees Ahmadzai and battling contributions from Mohammad Shehzad (46) and Asghar Stanikzai (47).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the 12-team qualifying event for the 2011 World Cup will be held from April 1st to 19th at nine venues in South Africa. The ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier will be played out over 54 matches with the final taking place at Centurion Park.
